History
The Corwin Library of Temple Israel of Hollywood was created in 1927, shortly after Temple was founded. It was set-up to serve the Religious School children but soon grew to accommodate adult books. I.M. Chadwick, one of the Temple founders, was a rare book collector and the library still owns some of his books. The library was known as the Calvert Lynn Altman Memorial Library until 1952, when it was renamed to honor Joseph H. Corwin. “Joe,” as he was known, was a dedicated member of Temple Israel whose son, Sherrill, and grandson, Bruce, both held the office of Temple President. Dorothy Corwin (wife of Sherrill and mother of Bruce) was a generous benefactor and supporter of the library during her lifetime.
