Weekly Adult Learning Opportunities

Friday 8:00am: Men’s Torah Study

Gather with men of all ages to study Torah. Enjoy each other’s friendship, insights, and life responses as inspired by the weekly Torah portion. Usually led by Rabbi Rosove.

Saturday at 9:00am: Shabbat Morning Study

Gather with an amazing community of committed congregants to study the weekly Torah portion. Our teachers are community members and come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, making this a constantly changing and engaging opportunity. Usually Lay Lead.

Women’s Learning Circle: 3rd Friday of every month at 8:00am

Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah

Join a two-year course, taught by an outstanding master teacher and TIOH member Judy Aronson. Learn to read Hebrew, Torah and prepare for an Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

Nussbaum Lecture

Co-sponsored by Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religious, this annual weekend, named for our beloved and honored Rabbi Max Nussbaum and his wife Ruth, brings incredible, highly acclaimed, cutting edge Jewish thinkers and speakers to Temple Israel of Hollywood for several days of learning, lectures and discussion.

Mussar

Mussar is a Jewish spiritual practice that focuses on our human characteristics called middot (anger, gratitude, humility, trust and patience). The practice of Mussar includes studying Mussar writings on these characteristics, reflecting on them in our lives and adopting personalized practices that help us use these characteristics in productive ways.

Introduction to Judaism

This introductory class provides a meaningful education experience for any person interested in knowing and understanding Judaism and Jewish life. The course offers an opportunity to broaden Jewish awareness, acquire basic Jewish vocabulary and gain intellectual and experiential knowledge of Judaism in an open and relaxed atmosphere.

Hebrew Crash Course

The National Jewish Outreach Program offers a popular course beginning each fall that is designed for Jews with little or no background in Hebrew. This free course concentrates on learning the Hebrew alphabet and beginning reading skills (required if you plan to become an Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah).

Labor of Love: Learn our Temple Israel of Hollywood Melodies

Join Chazzan Danny Maseng for an opportunity to learn the music we sing at services at TIOH. Learn the meaning of the prayers in the prayer book, the historical context of the liturgy, and feel part of a spiritually engaged community.

Choir

The choir is open to all ages 13 and up. Join great company, learn music, culture, history, Hebrew, liturgy and more. A commitment to learning challenging music; a commitment to attend rehearsals; an open heart & open mind are a must.

Midtown Luncheon

Dine and discuss relevant issues of our day in this incredible lunchtime series offered annually with Rabbi John Rosove and Michelle Missaghieh. Advanced registration is required.

TIOH Book Club

Join congregants and meet in each other’s homes to discuss books of interest to Jewish men and women.

Annual Retreats

2013 Women’s Retreat

Join with an incredible community of women from Temple Israel for a weekend of learning with scholar in residence Bea Lawrence, health and wellness classes, outdoor exploration, relaxation, mah jongg, great company and fun at Camp Ramah in Ojai, California.

2013 Men’s Weekend

Join a bunch of Jewish guys in the desert… again! Attend this awesome weekend in Joshua Tree complete with good times, great connections, learning and an unforgettable group of guys.
