This month the President Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial celebrations begin across the nation.

The Corwin Library will display its own Lincoln treasure:  Abraham Lincoln: The Tribute of the Synagogue. This book was donated to the library by Isaac Emmanuel Chadwick (Chadwick Chapel), one of the founders of Temple Israel. The book contains a compilation of sermons delivered from synagogue pulpits following the untimely demise of the beloved President.  The editor, Emmanuel Hertz, a New York lawyer and collector of Lincolniana signed and dedicated the 682 page book to his good friend Isaac Emmanuel Chadwick on March 10, 1928. It is #40 of a special edition of 100 autographed books. The volume, which contains sermons in German as well as in English is filled with tributes from the illustrious Rabbis and lay people of the early part of the twentieth century.  Some of the recognizable names whose words appear are Rabbis David Einhorn, Benjamin Szold (Henrietta’s father), Isaac Mayer Wise, Stephen S. Wise, Isaac Leeser, Judah Magnes, Professor Solomon Schechter and Emma Lazurus. With the generous patronage of Temple Israel members Susan Weil and Anatole Klebanoff and with the assistance of the restoration skills of book binder, Charlene Mathews this book has now returned to its rightful place in the Corwin library.  Please pay us a visit during the month of February to browse this Temple Israel heirloom.

The Corwin Library

The Corwin Library is dedicated to fostering the Jewish identity
and continuity of the members of Temple Israel of Hollywood
through education and the joy of reading.

History
The Corwin Library of Temple Israel of Hollywood was created in 1927, shortly after Temple was founded. It was set-up to serve the Religious School children but soon grew to accommodate adult books. I.M. Chadwick, one of the Temple founders, was a rare book collector and the library still owns some of his books. The library was known as the Calvert Lynn Altman Memorial Library until 1952, when it was renamed to honor Joseph H. Corwin. “Joe,” as he was known, was a dedicated member of Temple Israel whose son, Sherrill, and grandson, Bruce, both held the office of Temple President. Dorothy Corwin (wife of Sherrill and mother of Bruce) was a generous benefactor and supporter of the library during her lifetime.
