TIOH's New Social Justice Taskforce

Approximately one hundred community members gathered together at Temple Israel on Friday, July 1, for our Sit-In Shabbat. This action, which brought moral outrage, civic engagement and prayers for peace into sharp focus, represents the new face of Social Justice at TIOH. This past spring, our newly formed Social Justice Taskforce agreed on a “3 x 3”approach to Social Justice for our congregation: Through advocacy, action and education, we will work on issues of Bias/Criminal Justice Reform, Hunger & Homelessness and Gun Violence Prevention.

In partnership with School on Wheels, we are offering training and matching with a student at a convenient location for you. School on Wheels provides academic tutoring to children living in shelters, motels, cars, group foster homes and on the streets in Southern California. TIOH Garden Project

 GARDEN 2012

As part of our Rebuilding project TIOH has allocated space for a garden, which is used as a significant part of teaching our youth and community about the importance of fresh food for everyone, in particular those who are less fortunate. The garden is a way for kids to give back, find satisfaction from growing one's own food and sharing it with others in need.

Shoes that Fit

Every year, TIOH members participate in Shoes That Fit and provide a few hundred pairs of new shoes to local elementary school children in need. For many of the recipient children, these are their very first pair of brand new shoes. Each donor is matched with a specific child in need so they can provide the proper size and fit. To pitch in, please contact the TIOH Day School at 323-876-8330 x4000.
