Temple Israel of Hollywood is engaged in a number of ongoing Social Action projects and we are always looking for volunteers! This year in particular we have been working to focus our social action and advocacy efforts, on the fight to alleviate the challenge of access to food in our local community and around the world. Roll up your sleeves and get involved in one or all of our ongoing initiatives!
On the third Thursday of every month the Women of TIOH Sisterhood cook and deliver lunch to people living with AIDS/HIV in Los Angeles. Please join us! Contact Jessica Ritz (
TIOH members and friends have been serving holiday dinner to over 1500 homeless and hungry people in Hollywood every Christmas for the past 26 years! We provide families in need with food, clothes, toys, and photos with Santa Claus, fresh socks and blankets, toiletries and more.
As part of our Rebuilding project TIOH has allocated space for a garden, which is used as a significant part of teaching our youth and community about the importance of fresh food for everyone, in particular those who are less fortunate. The garden is a way for kids to give back, find satisfaction from growing one's own food and sharing it with others in need.
TIOH participates in various local food drives throughout the year and have proudly been among the top contributors to SOVA's annual High Holyday food drive several years in a row. Our Big Sunday food drive benefits SOVA among other organizations and we're always collecting food to send to these important organizations.
TIOH is committed to working in partnership with MAZON to end food insecurity in America. It requires that we work diligently not only to feed people directly but also to urge our elected officials not to weaken the safety net on which so many people rely.
Big Sunday, which has become one of the largest volunteer days in California, began as TIOH’s Mitzvah Day and has grown from there. Today, TIOH congregants participate in this day of community service throughout Los Angeles. This year, as a hub site of Big Sunday, we hosted 450 congregants and friends on our campus throughout the day. We donated 34 pints of blood, a truckload of food, several trucks of clothing and hundreds of books. We produced 600 sack lunches, 180 gift bags and dozens of casseroles among many other projects. For information on Big Sunday at TIOH email
Every year, TIOH members participate in Shoes That Fit and provide a few hundred pairs of new shoes to local elementary school children in need. For many of the recipient kids, these are their very first pair of brand new shoes. Each donor is matched with a specific child in need so they can provide the proper size and fit. To pitch in, please contact the TIOH Day School at 323-876-8330 x4000.
Join this committed group of TIOH members in providing support to our community members in times of need. These individuals visit the sick, coordinate and provide minyan services during shiva, bring meals to new mothers and more! Contact
TIOH, community members and our schools have committed to promoting and embracing a series of things that we can do for the planet including using reusable containers & bags, eating organically or locally grown food, reducing our energy consumption and more! We are committed to improving the environment and cutting down our waste.
