Social action, social justice and tikkun olam (healing the world) are important values of the modern Reform movement. TIOH has been a leader in Los Angeles social action
for the past eighty years. There are many ways for members (and non-members) to get involved. Below is a partial listing of opportunities at TIOH:

Dorot Tzedek: Generations of Justice at TIOH: affiliated with One LA/ IAF and Just Congregations, this group works towards change in the Los Angeles and greater communities in collaboration with other organizations, faith-based, and otherwise, through awareness and relationship building. click here for more information
Christmas Dinner Project: TIOH members and friends serve holiday dinner to over 1500 homeless and hungry people in Hollywood. We also provide them with clothes, toys, and various needed items. Click here for details.
Sisterhood AIDS lunch: Each month the women of TIOH Sisterhood cook and deliver lunch to people living in Los Angeles with AIDS. www.tiohsisterhood.org for more information.
Jewish World Watch: TIOH is a proud affiliate of JWW working to fight the genocide in Darfur and Sudan through education, advocacy and action. Click here for more information.

Families in Need: A unique cooperative effort between Temple Israel's Social Action Committee and Beyond Shelter, Families-In-Need is aiding homeless families in relocating to permanent housing. The committee, chaired by Marilyn Szatmary, collects household goods and furnishings and distributes them to families in need. Those wishing to help are asked to call the Big Sunday office at 323-549-9944
Food Collection: TIOH participates in various local food drives throughout the year. Contact us at shalom@tioh.org for information.
KOREH LA: Be a light unto the nations. The "Nation" in question is the city of Los Angeles--where close to 70 % of 4th graders at our public elementry schools read below grade level. These children need help in order to become proficient readers, better students, and successful adults. They need KOREH L.A. And KOREH L.A. needs you. KOREH L.A. is the one-to-one volunteer literacy program created by The Jewish Federation's Jewish Community Relations Committee to address this problem. Working with over 50 coalition partners like TIOH, KOREH L.A. recruits, trains, and coordinates reading partners who volunteer at L.A.U.S.D elementry schools. "Koreh" is Hebrew for read. If you've got one hour a week and can read this page, you've got what it takes to help a kid who is struggling with the darkness of illiteracy. Community Sponsored Agriculture: Join Temple Israel as we begin an exciting and socially relevant new program. Partnering with the Tierra Miguel Foundation, Temple Israel will join many other synagogues across the city and the country in participating in COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE (CSA). National Council of Jewish Women: We are young mothers and professors "attorneys and artists "activists and entrepreneurs "students and stock brokers " lifelong volunteers and plain old do-gooders. We are women with strong ties to our community, local schools and political and cultural institutions. We are in search of like-minded souls. Regardless of culture, ethnicity, religion or race, we share in the spirit of Tikkun Olam,"Hebrew for "repairing the world."
