Sophie Sartain

I am honored to serve on the board of trustees of Temple Israel of Hollywood and as Vice President of Social Action. My partner Roberta Grossman and I joined the temple in 2001 when our older daughter started at the Nursery School. All three of our children attended the Nursery School and Day School. My younger daughter is currently in the Teen Program. In 2013, I converted to Judaism with Rabbi Michelle Missaghieh. Since then my life has been enriched through adult classes and seminars at the temple. I have served on the Social Action Task Force, as co-chair of the Day School Ambassador Committee, and as co-chair of the TIOH Christmas Dinner for the hungry and homeless in our community. In previous years, we fed more than 1100 guests a turkey dinner on Christmas Day.

Professionally I am a writer and documentary filmmaker. Some of my credits include Seeing Allred, about feminist attorney Gloria Allred; and Mimi and Dona, a film about caregiving and disability starring my aunt and grandmother. Roberta and I have also made Jewish-themed films together including Hava Nagila (The Movie), Above and Beyond, and Blessed Is the Match: The Life and Death of Hannah Senesh.
